Gwangjang Market’s Best Ramyeon Spot
Translated from the Korean original.
One cold winter day I had a meeting in Jongno, so I stopped by Gwangjang Market right next door.
I was happily wondering what new thing to try this time while looking around the market, but that day in particular
nothing really appealed to me. So I thought I’d just have some simple odeng (fish cakes), and the place I dropped into was this one –
“Baby Dinosaur” (Agi Gongnyong).

- Location: 398-9 Jongno 5-ga. From the 10-won bread (sipwon-ppang) stall, go in about 2 metres and you’ll spot it right away.
- Opening hours: from 6:00 p.m. until the last customer goes home
- Closed on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month

At some places the odeng has a bitter, fishy taste that ruins your appetite halfway through.
Have you ever had that experience?
I like odeng, so I often cook it at home and buy it out too, which means I can tell to some degree whether the fish cake itself is good or not.
And the odeng here was really quite tasty..
While I was eating, the people at the next seat ordered ramyeon, and I suddenly got curious about the price, so
I took a photo of the menu board.

Chapagetti with a fried egg added comes to KRW 6,000. Haha.
At first I thought the fried egg was too expensive, but then I thought about what a tray of eggs costs these days and decided that price is fair enough.
Do you know how much a tray of eggs costs? Out of nowhere, why am I talking about egg prices.. haha.
A tray of 30 is about KRW 12,000. On sale, of course, it’s around KRW 9,000 to KRW 10,000.
Still, you’d rather buy fertile free-range eggs, wouldn’t you?
If you’re buying, you want the healthy ones. At KRW 12,000 a tray that works out to about KRW 400 per egg, so my conclusion was that a shop really does have to charge KRW 1,000 for a fried egg…. Hehe
Prices have gone uuuuup so much ㅠㅠㅠ

Why does ramyeon taste better out of one of those thin aluminium pots? Or rather, why does it look better? Ha ha. If I had a pot like that at home it would have gone straight to the scrap dealer without a moment’s hesitation. Haha
While I was taking photos, a foreign tourist – a woman on her own – came in and ordered ramyeon..
Somehow it made me happy.. I hope K-food keeps spreading far and wide and gets even more popular. Heh
Here they also make anju (dishes to go with drinks) fresh on the spot.
If you fancy a glass of soju, I’d suggest ordering ramyeon along with odeng broth and some anju!

- 🍜A bowl of ramyeon is KRW 3,000–4,000. You can add a bowl of rice.
- 🌶️Unlimited self-serve kimchi with the basic ramyeon. A real Korean-style ramyeon experience.
- 🏪Concentrated in the ‘ramyeon alley’ near the ground-floor entrance. The banchan (side dish) alley on the basement level is worth a look too.
